Building Resilience: A Cybersecurity Graduate's Story of Growth |
Abstract
Starting a career in cybersecurity can feel like stepping into a foreign language class, where terms like PAM, UAR, XDR, WAF, XSOAR seem baffling. This presentation will take you through my journey as a cybersecurity graduate, highlighting the challenges I faced and the strategies I employed to overcome them. The steep learning curve was daunting, with new acronyms and concepts to grasp daily. The fear of making mistakes and the feeling of isolation were constant companions. However, through self-education, attending webinars, taking online courses, and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, I gradually built my confidence and competence. This session will provide insights into the common challenges faced by newcomers in the cybersecurity industry including the lack of practical knowledge, difficulty keeping pace with industry developments, imposter syndrome, and feelings of isolation. By sharing personal experiences and insights, I aim to empower other aspiring cybersecurity professionals, providing practical strategies for building resilience and achieving success in the field. The presentation will also offer valuable insights for experienced professionals and organizations on creating supportive environments that foster the growth and development of new cybersecurity talent.
